Province of Isernia, Molise
The Province of Isernia is situated in the middle of the Appennine chain, between the Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic, but it is unconnected to the sea. Established in 1970 with 52 municipalities previously belonging to the Province of Campobasso, the province is scheduled for merging with the Province of Campobasso as part of an administrative reform.
The territory of the Province of Isernia, where the most ancient presence of man in Europe was recorded, offers important signs of the presence of many civilizations, such as pre-historic settlements, Samnite fortresses, Roman towns, imposing medieval castles, Romanesque and baroque churches, as well as a natural landscape that is now included in parks and natural reserves due to its uniqueness in vegetation and wildlife.
The Province of Isernia has a rich heritage of the transhumance economy of past ages when shepherds from Abruzzo and Molise traveled with millions of sheep down to the Apulian plains in early autumn and then back to the mountain pastures in May. This has left over 100 km of grass highways, 111 meters wide, crossing the landscape and leaving their marks on the face of the land and the customs of the people.
The Province of Isernia is home to 51 municipalities, including Acquaviva d'Isernia, Agnone, Bagnoli del Trigno, Belmonte del Sannio, Cantalupo nel Sannio, Capracotta, Carovilli, Carpinone, Castel del Giudice, Castelpetroso, Castelpizzuto, Castel San Vincenzo, Castelverrino, Cerro al Volturno, Chiauci, Civitanova del Sannio, Colli a Volturno, Conca Casale, Filignano, Forlì del Sannio, Fornelli, Frosolone, Isernia, Longano, Macchia d'Isernia, Macchiagodena, Miranda, Montaquila, Montenero Val Cocchiara, Monteroduni, Pesche, Pescolanciano, Pescopennataro, Pettoranello del Molise, Pietrabbondante, Pizzone, Poggio Sannita, Pozzilli, Rionero Sannitico, Roccamandolfi, Roccasicura, Rocchetta a Volturno, San Pietro Avellana, Sant'Agapito, Sant'Angelo del Pesco, Sant'Elena Sannita, Santa Maria del Molise, Scapoli, Sessano del Molise, Sesto Campano, Vastogirardi, and Venafro.
